Homemade Elderberry Syrup

I had homemade elderberry syrup already within a post, but I really wanted to give it the recognition that it deserves. With flu season full force this would be great to have on hand.

There have been many studies done on the effectiveness of elderberry to shorten the life of cold and flu symptoms. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center using an elderberry syrup-like, Sambucus elderberry syrup  could shorten the duration of the flu. The extract was so effective that researchers compared it with prescription medications like Tamiflu (which has been linked to horrible side effects)! One study suggested that elderberry could kill the H1N1 virus in test tubes.

Let’s take a look at the benefits of making Homemade Elderberry Syrup.

  • Decreases mucous production by reducing swelling of mucous membranes.
  • Boosts immune system.
  • Prevents some types of flu, and decreases the length of flu symptoms.
  • Anti-inflammatory and Anti-viral.
  • Could fight against cancer.
  • It can help treat upset stomach and gas.
  • Used for detoxification.
  • Rich in vitamin A and C.

Elderberry Syrup is simple to make!

  • After you purchase your dried berries you simply simmer them in filtered water! I like to add extra benefits by adding spices like ginger, cloves, and Ceylon cinnamon!
  • After simmering the elderberries, spices in the water, simply strain and store.
  • You can add good quality local honey if you would like, or add it plain to remedies like my Honey Elixir!

When you make the syrup yourself, not only are you saving money, but I like to be in control of what I’m putting in. Adding things like good quality cinnamon, ginger, and cloves provides more health benefits! I like what Robert Urich said “A healthy outside starts from the inside.”

Tips and precautions
  • I use without the honey because I add to honey elixir and homemade elderberry gummies. If you don't add the honey it seems to have less of shelf life (about 2-3 weeks refrigerated )
  • If you are pregnant or nursing do not take it.
  • If you have an autoimmune disease do not take it because it could stimulate the immune system.
  • Always consult with your doctor before taking anything new especially if you are on medication or having treatment.
