If you are looking to clean up your diet, but aren’t quite ready to give up sweets this healthy apple crumble might just be your new favorite dessert. How to make a healthy apple crumble

Healthy apple crumble is easy to make. All we have to do is switch up a few ingredients and you will be on your way to making a healthier apple crumble!

Let’s take a look at what we need to make it.

  • Maple syrup. Instead of adding more refined sugar to your diet, we are going to substitute it for maple syrup. The standard American diet has a way too much sugar. Too much refined sugar can cause heart disease, fatty liver, leaky gut, and more. Maple syrup is a much better alternative with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants!
  • Oat flour. I like oat flour because you can just blend up some oats to make it. It’s simple to make and has simple ingredients. Sometimes I will notice I just need a break from flour, bread, crackers, etc.. Oats are a great substitute and have benefits like soluble fiber, can help to prevent diabetes, and are heart healthy!

What can I substitute for butter in apple crumble?

All the other ingredients in this healthy apple crumble are typical. If you are dairy-free and wondering if you can substitute the butter, you can! Refined coconut oil is a great substitute for a crumble. You can check out this pumpkin crisp recipe where I substitute coconut oil for butter. I’ve found that coconut oil is a great substitute and it is a good heart-healthy oil. Coconut oil has many health benefits as it promotes mental clarity, is anti-bacterial, and is heart-healthy!

Best apples for apple crumble

When you are looking to pick out a type of apple for this healthy apple crumble pick something sweet because we are only using maple syrup to sweeten it. Don’t pick things like granny smith or other green sour apples for this dessert.

  • Fuji– Fuji apples are sweet and crunchy and make a great choice for this dessert.
  • Gala – Gala apples are also a great choice. They are sweet and crisp and ideal for baking.
  • Rome – Rome apples are sweet and firm and great for dishes like apple crumble.

These are a few of my top choices. Not every apple is great for baking. Some are better for just eating or adding to an apple salad. Some work better for making things like homemade apple sauce or even freezing.

Is apple crumble healthy?

Apple crumble isn’t typically considered a super healthy dessert. Yes, you have the apples which are a healthy element, but overall most recipes will call for a couple of cups of sugar and flour. In this recipe, we are making it healthier. This healthy apple crumble is sweetened with maple syrup, and regular flour is replaced with ground oats or oat flour. I even chose to leave on the skins of the apples for more fiber and a bit less work.
